  3. §2.5Literal Equationsand Formulas

  4. Literal Equations: A literal equation is an equation that involves two or more variables. When working with literal equations, you can use any of the techniques you’ve learned in this chapter to isolate a particular variable.

  5. Example 1: Rewriting a Literal Equation Solve each equation for x. Then, find the value of y for each value of y. 4x = 3y – 7; 4, 5, 6 4 x = 3(5) -7 = 2 x = 3(4) -7 = 5 x = 3(6) -7 = 11 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 x = 3y -7

  6. Example 2: Rewriting a Literal Equation With Only Variables Solve the given equation for x. ax – x = c HINT: What would the product of x(a – 1) be? x(a – 1) = c (a – 1) (a – 1) (a – 1) x = c

  7. Example 3: Rewriting a Geometric Formula What is the length of a rectanglewith a perimeter of 36 and a width of 6? P = 2l + 2w 36 – 2(6)= l 2 -2w-2w 12 = l P – 2w= 2l 2 2 2 P – 2w = l
