  5. DEFENDING SCHOOL MEALS • New Federal Nutrition Standards bring school meals in line with dietary guidelines for Americans while providing the nutrition they need • New School Meal Standards are based on recommendations from the Institute of Medicine to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables while setting age appropriate calorie ranges. • School lunch was never meant to provide students with 100% of their food or calories for the day. Students should be eating a healthy breakfast daily • Parents are encouraged to learn more about the options available in their schools and support these healthier choices by encouraging students to try the variety of fruits and vegetables offered at the school • As our nation struggles with rising rates of diet related illnesses, it is critical that we maintain support for our school meal programs, which promote healthier lifestyles for our children. These new nutritional standards are particularly important for our children who rely on free or reduced price meals, and may have limited access to healthy affordable foods and well-balanced meals in their communities
