  2. Assimilate (v) • To consume and incorporate; to become similar • Assimilation (n) • It can be difficult to assimilate to life in a new country.

  3. Cremation (n) • The act of burning the dead • Cremate (v) • The choice to be cremated often has to do with religious beliefs.

  4. Domesticate (v) • To make something suitable for being in a home. • Domestic (adj) • Mary like to cook and sew. She was very domestic.

  5. Folklore (n) • Traditional myths of people transmitted orally • Folkloric (adj) • Pre-historical studies involve the use of folklore.

  6. Fossilize (v) • To become preserved in clay or stone or ash after death, so that a natural record is left of the original organism; to become rigid and stuck in old ways • Fossil (n); fossilization (n) • There are dinosaur fossils on display in the Museum of Natural History in NYC.

  7. Relic (n) • Something left from a long-ago culture, time period, or person • A record player is now considered a cultural relic, and someday our computers will be as well!

  8. Rite (n) • A ceremony meant to achieve a certain purpose • Each culture has its own unique burial rites.

  9. Ritually (adv) • As part of a traditional ceremony or habit • Ritual (n); ritual (adj) • It was a ritual for the football team to do a dance before they went on the field to play.

  10. Saga (n) • A long story about important events from long ago • The Iliad is an example of a saga.

  11. Vestige (n) • A visible trace that something once existed • The archaeological site contained several vestiges of the old village.
