  2. The Aztec c.1300-1520 Emperors ruled a unified empire of city-states through conquest and by forming alliances with surrounding tribes. Subjugated peoples paid tribute to the government in the form of goods or services.

  3. Geography The Aztec called their capital city Tenochtitlan ("Place of the Rock-Cactus Fruit"). It was built on an island in Lake Texcoco. Three causeways connected the capital to the mainland.

  4. Farming Practices The Aztec constructed Chinampas, or floating gardens, which could yield up to 7 food crops a year.

  5. Social Classes The Aztec lived in large villages called calpullis. There were opportunities for upward mobility. Social classes included: Nobles – smallest group, served as government officials & priests. Controlled the other social classes. Commoners – made up the majority of the population they worked the land for themselves and noble’s land as well. Some were artisans and merchants. Unskilled laborers – most were serfs. Like commoners they had to work the land but they could not own it. About 1/3 of the population. Slaves – usually prisoners of war. Sometimes criminals or people who had not repaid debts.
