  5. Important Aspects of the New Machine Some components are contaminated with 14C and 3H (very low level) Every component removed has to be cleared for radiation, recorded and labelled The ion source and power supplies need to float to high ~ 200 kV voltage so require a high voltage platform Need to design and manufacture a 200 kV acceleration lens Need to consider the state of the control system

  6. Radioactivity Some components are contaminated with 14C and 3H (very low level) Every component removed has to be cleared for radiation, recorded and labelled

  7. High Voltage Platform maximum beam energy was 500 kV we only ever used up to 200 kV so limit new facility to 200 kV 2 spare insulating legs rated at 500 kV have been split into 4 rated at 250 kV 0.75 m

  8. Acceleration lens We need an acceleration lens to increase the beam energy from 20 kV up the final energy Usually use 100 kV, but 200 kV maximum is needed The one we use is 14C contaminated – no good! So, we get one made by ‘beefing up’ Jaap’s 100 kV design But the manufacturer cannot accommodate the size required So we buy 2 100 kV lenses But the cost goes up to £20k We have a spare but this is labelled as 3H contaminated – any good? Testing reveals no discernable activity – good!

  9. Acceleration lens Close inspection reveals a modular construction 1.5 m

  10. Acceleration lens Should be OK if we can dismantle it without damage

  11. Control System Whilst MEIS has a working control system, we have no expertise or support if something goes wrong Essentially we have been using it on ‘borrowed’ time We need a control system because of the complexity of MEIS and because we have power supplies that float at high voltages Do we try and use the existing control system? What are the alternatives?

  12. Control System(s) A simple way to control at high voltages

  13. Control System(s) A better way?

  14. Control System(s)

  15. Control System(s) Unfortunately... this is the wiring for one EQT

  16. Control System The plan is - to bring the existing system to Huddersfield But, I think we need to look at alternatives with some haste

  17. Accommodation HT platform 1.5x2.0 HT enclosure 3.5x3.5 lifting frame Raised floor 5.5x5.5 11.0 m

  18. Beamline Magnet We have a smaller magnet which is much lighter (existing is 5 Tonnes) But its horizontal focusing is too strong
