Measurement Metrics “What gets measured, gets managed,” Sarah Hammond Creighton, Tufts University • Volume-based: cubic yards, bags, truckloads • Weight-based: tons, pounds, kilograms • Scale weight tare sheets: trucks, compactors, roll-offs • Waste audits: characterization, weight distributions • Procurement: tonnage coming into campus (e.g., “2,204 tons fine paper purchased campus-wide in FY07”)

Full-time Staff Supervision • Staff: hire only the best, professional licensure (CDL), shift time restrictions • Work reporting procedures: daily route sheet, tare slips, time sheets, vehicle inspection slips • “Trust, but verify”: customer check-ins, peer reports (with a grain of salt), words from the weeds • Carrots and sticks: rewards and sanctions

  6. Contractor Supervision • Bid specifications: require empty truck, on-campus scale weigh-in, safety training, separate service and tipping fees • Check-in calls • Weight tare sheets • Customer feedback • Training for vacation/absence substitutions

  7. Student/Volunteer Supervision • Paid student captains • Charitable organization volunteers: flexibility • Non-monetary payment: food, fun, community good will, goods in kind
