  5. Success in the arts is NOT (!) subjective Technique Content Intellectual Behavior

  6. Art: It’s not only about the end product! Art is both a process and a product!

  7. Teachers can Assess student Learning with and through the arts! Key Questions: What do you want the children to learn?! How will you know they have learned it?!

  8. ExampleReading: Theater - acting for understanding understanding character and making inferences • Becoming a character – acting out passages and main ideas form the reading text • Creating a tableaux (frozen picture) • answering questions from a panel in character • To what extent does the student capture the essence and meaning of the character(s)?

  11. Assessment is a part of the artistic process! As we make art, we assess our work by making choices, editing, and adapting

  12. Formative and Summative Assessment Formative strategies are used in process, allowing the teacher and student to chart progress and guide development. There are a variety of formative assessment tools available to teachers and students, including observation checklists, rubrics, and personal reflection prompts. Summative strategies look at outcomes – did students learn or were they able to do what we set out to teach them?

  13. Arts are great for both Formative and summative assessments In other words – for ongoing assessment of understanding – and then for a final assessment!

  17. Creativity – Common Core • The use of arts for both understanding and assessment is fundamental to learning….and is foundational in the Common Core standards…for example: • “Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, settings, or events.” • “Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation.” • “Interpret information presented visually, orally, or in animation….”
