  2. Church and State Matthew 22:15-22

  3. God and Caesar • 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Jesus in what He said. 16 And they sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any. 17 Tell us then, what do You think? Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?” (Matthew 22:15-17)

  4. God and Caesar • 18 But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites? 19 Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax.” And they brought Him a denarius. 20 And He said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 And hearing this, they were amazed, and leaving Him, they went away. (Matthew 22:18-22)

  5. Biblical Political Leaders • Joseph • Daniel • Nehemiah • Esther • Mordecai • Deborah • David • “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD” (Psalm 33:12)

  6. A Christian Worldview • A platonic concept of spirituality which does not include all of life is not true biblical spirituality. True spirituality touches all of life, including things of government and law, and not just “religious things.”- Francis Schaeffer

  7. A Christian Worldview • 15 But if I should be delayed, I have written so that you will know how people ought to act in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. (1 Timothy 3:15) • Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them. (Ephesians 5:11)

  8. God and Government • The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He wishes. (Proverbs 21:1) • When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when a wicked man rules, people groan. (Proverbs 29:2)

  9. God and Government • Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed quickly, therefore the hearts of the sons of men among them are given fully to do evil. (Ecclesiastes 8:11) • 1 Woe to those enacting evil statutes and writing oppressive laws 2 to keep the poor from getting a fair trial and to deprive the afflicted among my people of justice, so that widows can be their spoil and they can plunder the fatherless. (Isaiah 10:1-2)

  10. God and Government • 20 Can wicked rulers be allied with You, those who frame injustice by statute? 21 They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. 22 But the Lord has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. 23 He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the Lord our God will wipe them out. (Psalm 94:20-23)

  11. God and Government • 20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight! 22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and valiant men in mixing strong drink, 23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of his right! (Isaiah 5:20-23)

  12. God and Government • Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. (Proverbs 14:34) • “Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare.” (Jeremiah 29:7)

  13. God and Government • By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down. (Proverbs 11:11)

  14. Old Testament Prophets • Isaiah 13-23 – he spoke out against 10 nations in that section: Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Syria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Edom, Arabia, and Tyre

  15. Old Testament Prophets • The Lord has established His throne in the heavens; and His sovereignty rules over all. (Psalm 103:19) • For the kingdom is the Lord’s and He rules over the nations. (Psalm 22:28)

  16. Old Testament Prophets • “Therefore, O king, may my advice be pleasing to you: break away now from your sins by doing righteousness and from your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, in case there may be a prolonging of your prosperity.” (Daniel 4:27)

  17. Punish Evil, Praise Good • 13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. (1 Peter 2:13-14)

  18. The Purpose of Government • 1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; (Romans 13)

  19. The Purpose of Government • 4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.

  20. The Purpose of Government • 7 Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. (Romans 13:1-7)

  21. The Purpose of Government • “Why do we think God put Romans 13 and 1 Peter 2 and other related passages (as in the Psalms and Proverbs) in the Bible? Are they in the Bible simply as a matter of intellectual curiosity for Christians who will read them privately but never use them to speak to government officials about how God understands their roles and responsibilities? Does God intend this material to be concealed from people in government and kept secret by Christians who read it and silently moan about, ‘how far government has strayed from what God wants it to be’”? – Wayne Grudem, Politics

  22. Church and State • Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. (Proverbs 14:34) • Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord… (Psalm 33:12) • Blessed are the people to whom such blessings fall! Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord! (Psalm 144:15)
