  • Network with other new consultants in your area, plan to meet regularly for peer support

  • Suspend any cynicism about procedures such as appraisal and job plans

5. Give regular feedback to your junior staff, not just in clinical supervision.

  • Be approachable, positive and inspiring

  • Don’t be afraid to criticise, where it is due

  • Set aside dedicated time for this

  • Act on it, file it, or bin it

    8. Deal with any complaints quickly and don't take criticism personally.
