The dust bowl was between 1929-1937 The worst drought hit North America those years Little rain fell Crops failed and dirt turned to dust Dry winds howled across the prairies, kicking up dust clouds that buried fences and barns The mid-1930s, size of harvest had dropped to 1/3 of what it had been On some farms there wasn’t hay enough to feed the livestock Almost 14 000 prairie families boarded up their farms and left, hoping to find better lives Day after Black Sunday a press reporter used the term “Dust Bowl” Dust Bowl Facts

  4. People who stayed faced another problem: swarms of grasshoppers James Grey(writer)came across a cloud of grasshoppers. He wrote later: The swarm was on us so suddenly that our windshield was solidly encrusted with splattered insects in a matter of seconds… our car was a ghastly mess. The crashing grasshoppers had given it a sickly, stinking green coating. The windshield wipers only created a gooey smear… In Weyburn(Saskatchewan)we made a deal with the son of a garage man to clean the grasshoppers off our car for a dollar. It took him almost two hours. Ottawa 1935, Mackenzie King returned to office His government gave some money to help unemployed workers and farmers, it was not enough Canadians wee upset, they began looking for a new leader with fresh ideas Severe dust storms causing ecological and agriculture damage The damage was to the American and Canadian prairie lands from 1930-1936(in some areas until 1940) The phenomenon caused by severe drought coupled with decades of offensive farming without crop rotation Tons of top soil were blown of barren fields and carried in storm clouds and have taken far 100s of miles Dust Bowl Facts
