  2. Objectives • Describe the full court press related to catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). • Outline the lessons learned from the national CUSP: Stop CAUTI program. • List one thing you will do in the next week to decrease the incidence of CAUTI in your hospital.

Questions to Run On • What areas can I target quickly to reduce CAUTI? • How can I use the CUSP model to provide a framework for CAUTI reduction? • What are the barriers I see in my hospital that keeps us from reaching our CAUTI reduction goals? • What other resources will I use to reach our goal?

  6. How are we going to meet our goal? • All hospitals committed to reducing CAUTI in all units. • Focus efforts in ED and OR • Targeted Affinity Group Calls • Identify hospitals with highest incidence and provide one on one coaching

  12. Starts with a Vision and Goal • Focus on patient harm – the why • Decrease CAUTI rate by 40%, Target zero • Decrease catheter utilization • Begins with insertion necessity including ED and OR • Daily assessment • Share current state and future state • Tell a story

Have You Addressed these Critical Areas? • Made reducing CAUTI a hospital goal communicated and supported by Leadership • Involved front line staff and physicians • Established appropriate criteria assessment • Developed removal process • Assessed insertion and maintenance competency • Identified and addressed current barriers to getting to zero • Targeted the emergency department, OR and intensive care units for appropriate use

  14. Remember… It can be a long journey to zero but… Decreasing the use and length of time of catheter placement will decrease patient harm
