  3. The Union • Advantages (Strengths) • Larger Population • Greater Resources • Capital (money) • Factories to produce war materials • Better Transportation (railroads, canals, roads) • Disadvantages(Weaknesses) • Little knowledge of the land • Inferior Military Leadership • Motivation

  4. The Union • Goal: Restore the Union • Strategy • Invade the South and force the seceded states to give up their quest for sovereignty • HOW: • Blockade Southern ports • Gain control of the Mississippi River • Capture the Confederate Capital (Richmond)

  5. The Confederacy • Who were they? • VA, NC, SC, TN, AR, GA, AL, MS, LA, TX, FL • Capital: Richmond, VA • Leaders? • President: Jefferson Davis • Commanding General: Robert E. Lee

  6. The Confederacy • Advantages (Strengths) • Motivation (similar to the Revolutionary War) • Superior Leadership • Knowledge of the land • Disadvantages(Weaknesses) • Smaller Population • Less Resources • Few railroads, factories, canals, roads • Limited Capital (money)

The Confederacy • Goal: Establish itself as an independent nation • Strategy • Fight long enough and hard enough until the Northerners lost interest in fighting, or no longer saw it as a priority worth fighting for • HOW: • Fight a defensive war…hold onto as much land as possible • Receive aid from England & France • Attack Washington D.C.
