  1. Breaking TheHeart of God Isa. 1:1-4

  2. Isaiah 1:1-4 • 1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

  3. 2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

  4. 3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

  5.  4. Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

  6. What we learn in these 4 verses:

  7. The vision of Isaiah • 1. The book of Isaiah…the great prophet • Of God that prophesied concerning the • Coming Messiah. • 2. He was the son of Amoz.

  8. The Time when these warnings aregiven by Isaiah • In days of Kings of Judah. • Uzziah, • Jotham, • Ahaz • and • Hezekiah • What he says is about Judah and Jerusalem

  9. HEAR… • So much to hear… • Hear, O heavens • Give ear, O earth..

  10. What the Lord hath spoken… • Not what someone else has said • Not what the world says about what the Lord says • Not what you have heard from someone else: • What the Lord hath spoken • Heb. 1:1 God…hath spoken • John 20:30,31 But these are written • that you might believe!

  11. Describes what He has done forIsrael: • I have nourished and brought up children • But---they have rebelled against me. • Rebelled against the one that has • Nourished them and brought them up…. • John 12:48

  12. Illustration: • V.3 • 1. The ox knoweth his owner…. • He is assoicated with him, knows the • one who has fed him watered him, • nourished him…. • 2.. The ass knows his master’s crib… • The closeness is as the ass knowing • about the crib of his Master. He has • slept there,, been there and taken in • there…

  13. 2 Charges made against Israel,the ‘people of God’ • 1. My people, Israel, do not know • 2. They will not even consider! • They belong to me, but have rebelled • Against me.

  14. Can you imagine a child doing that to his • Own father!!

  15. A description of their condition: • 1. A Sinful Nation!! • 2. A people laden with iniquity • 3. A seed of evildoers • 4. Children that are corrupters • 5. They have forsaken the Lord • 6. They have provoked the Holy one of Israel unto anger. • 7. They have gone away backward… • backsliders….

  16. The Heart of God broken..grieved! • Cf. Gen. 6:5,6 • 5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. • 6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. It broke His • Heart!!

  17. Isaiah mourned Israel who had‘gone away backward’ Isa. 1:4 • Isaiah is not the only prophet who calls • Israel backsliders. • Jeremiah: • Jerm. 3; Jeremiah called Judah, • “backsliding Israel” 4 times in Jerm. 3.

  18. A backslider is • 1. One who is gone backward instead of • Forward. • 2. One was once obedient to the Lord, but has now ‘forsaken Him” • 3. Ill. Demas. 2 Tim. 4:10 • This causes a ‘heartbreaking’ problem:

  19. The Possibility of backsliding… • 1. makes it a heartbreaking problem. • 2. The Bible shows that a Christian can backslide. • 1 Pet. 5:,8,9 • Gal. 6:1 • Heb. 3:12 • James 5:19,20

  20. A great problem for everyone here • Today… • All of US can ..fall away! • I Cor. 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

  21. The Probability of backsliding makes it a heartbreaking problem • This is a strong tendency illustrated by Bible examples. • cf. Acts 8:13-24 • There is not a single individual in this building this morning that is so strong that it cannot happen to you. • Paul even states that it could happen to • Him! I Cor. 9:27 • The Bible supports the idea that backsliding is a tendency. Gal. 6:1

  22. The Prevalence of backsliding makes it a heartbreaking problem! • Think of all those who are no longer faithful to the Lord! • Backsliding occurs even among leaders! • Elders, Deacons, Preachers,Teachers

  23. Conclusion • 1. God has always been and is gravely concerned about backsliding. • A.In Israel. Isa. 1:16-20 • B.In the church. Acts 8:14-24; Gal. 2:11 • When we think as God thinks, we, too, are concerend about this great problem.

  24. Pray fervently (Rom. 10:1-2) • for an erring brother/sister, • visit him, vist her, • love him, love her, • and • help him /her find his way back to the Lord.

  25. Matt. 23:37 Illustration: 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

  26. Gen. 6:6 • 6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

  27. How often have we ‘grieved’ the very heart • Of God. • me

  28. God so loved the world….. • John 3:16 • One lost..find him, her….and bring them • Back to the Lord.! • Leaving God is the worst thing that • Any of us can ever do! • Gal 5:4

  29. Have you broken (grieved) the very • Heart of God! • Come back before it is everlastingly • Too late for you.
