  1. Hildegard E. Peplau • Interpersonal Relations in Nursing -- 1952 • Pre-reading Questions • Johnson, B. & Webber, P. (2005). An Introduction to Theory and Reasoning in Nursing, pp. 128-131. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

  2. The reading passage is about a theory of nursing and the nurse who developed the theory. It is an interpersonal theory, which means that the nurse and the patient work together as a team. Consider the following questions.

  3. Have you ever been confined in a hospital or have you visited someone who was? What did you observe the role of the nurse to be?

  4. If you are hospitalized, what kind of nurse would you like to have? What should the nurse’s role be?

  5. Open the text “Hildegard E. Peplau: Interpersonal Relations in Nursing--1952.” Look quickly through the text to see how it is arranged. Is there a title? Are there sub-titles introducing the sections and if so, what are they? Is there a list? Is there a bibliography?

  6. Quickly find the list of six items. What are the six items in the list?

  7. Before beginning to read, study the questions on the next slide. As you read, look for the answers to these questions.

  8. In what subjects did Peplau receive her Master’s degree and her doctorate? • In what way was Peplau’s career both practical and theoretical? • In what way was her book Interpersonal Relations in Nursing (1952) unique? • Was the impact of her work limited to psychiatric nursing? • How did Peplau’s theory change nursing’s view of the role of the patient? • What are the three phases in the nurse-patient relationship process? • What are some of the roles of the nurse, according to Peplau’s theory? • Explain how the nurse moves through the three phases and assumes the various roles. • Briefly describe the influence of Peplau’s theory.

  9. Now read the text through to the end.
