  2. XES Scope The X-Ray Endstation Systems group will create the infrastructure required for experimenters to make best scientific use of the LCLS radiation safely

The Endstation Systems will provide: Personnel protection systems (PPS) Protect people from x-rays, lasers, etc. Machine protection systems (MPS) Protect machine from users Network and computer supportCables, networks, servers, data storage Prototype detectors a suite of x-ray detectors for experiments Instrumentation for first Atomic Physics experiments Beamline controls Hardware, software Synchronized laser system fs laser system synchronized to FEL Mechanical/Vacuum AMO - and sample chambers

LCLS Endstation systems coordination with the LCLS experimental equipment project (PIXEL) • The PIXEL project is a separate project from LCLS construction • LCLS-funded items and experimental equipment items must be kept separate • PIXEL equips 3 hutches • Different project lengths • Coordination is important

Consequences for LCLS Endstation Systems Revised XES Scope: • LCLS X-Ray Endstation Systems will build one station, for soft x-ray atomic physics • XES will still provide global infrastructure for experimenters (Network, PPS, MPS) • Now: Other WBS items will be reprogrammed for AP (beamline controls, vacuum, lasers) So LCLS resources and schedule within the Endstation systems group are being rearranged so as to provide maximum capability for the LCLS-funded atomic physics station

  8. AMOP Experiment Soft x-ray AMOP experimental station in hutch #1 (NEH) • Atomic Physics to explore interaction of FEL beam and matter on a fundamental level • Inner shell photo absorption processes • Photo-fragmentation analysis • Focused and/or pump-probe geometry

  11. AMOP Hutch Layout • Optics: monochromator, focusing system • Laser system (higher power) • Sample System • Chambers (sample, diagnostics) • UHV system • Detectors (particles, e, ions) • Diagnostics (x rays, laser)

Impacts on XES Planning, Cost and Schedule: • As before: XES will provide global infrastructure for experimenters (Network, PPS, MPS) • Now: Other WBS items will be reprogrammed for AP (beamline controls, vacuum, lasers) • Coordinate with XTOD equipment placement in hutch1 • Cost neutral changes • Schedule only affected in FY06 • Hire Atomic Physicist for XES as soon as possible • Coordinate with AMOP working group and PIXEL

  13. Plan for FY05 • Hire Atomic -, and Detector Physicist as soon as possible • Hire Controls Engineer next after • Start detailed design of AMOP and Detectors

Summary • The endstation systems will provide the infrastructure for the interface between the LCLS source and its scientific applications • The endstation systems group is coordinating with the instrument development project (PIXEL) and XTOD and is focusing its activity on one AMOP station in one hutch • XES will work closely with LCLS AMOP working group • Revised scope is being programmed and implemented
