  2. ECSS • What is ECSS ? • European Cooperation for Space Standardization • An effort of ESA, European national agencies and industry • ECSS goal: • To create a single European set of (space) standards for all European space agencies and industry R.Grünagel - Structural Design Section ESTEC

  3. ECSS • ECSS origin • In 1988 EUROSPACE (representing European industry) asked ESA and CNES to harmonise their PA requirements. • In 1993 the European space community recognized the general problems and the European Cooperation for Space Standardization was formed. • Members • Full participating members are ESA and the national agencies of Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Norway and UK. • Industry is represented through EUROSPACE. • EUMETSAT is an observer / liaison with ISO TC20 SC13 and SC14 R.Grünagel - Structural Design Section ESTEC

  4. ECSS • Levels of ECSS standards • Level 0 - describing policy and objectives of the ECSS system and its architecture • Level 1 - describing the strategy in each domain (Management, QA and Engineering). Global overview of the requirements and interfaces between the elements of level 2. • Level 2 - describing required objectives and functions for all aspects of individual domains and disciplines • Level 3 - describing methods, procedures and tools to achieve the requirements of the level 2 documents. Defining constraints and requirements for interfaces and performance of a product or activity. R.Grünagel - Structural Design Section ESTEC

  6. ECSS • Status of ECSS (see also www.estec.esa.nl/ecss) • Over 26 standards are published • 49 are in preparation • ESA, CNES and ASI are already applying some ECSS standards • Some level 3 standards are: • Q-20-09A Nonconformance control system • Q-40-12A Fault Tree Analysis • E-10-02A Verification • New 1999 Working group for level 3: • E-10-07 Exchange of product data (presented by H.P.deKoning) R.Grünagel - Structural Design Section ESTEC
