  1. Weaving Digital Contentbased on Curriculum Standards

  2. If you don’t know your subject standards, you can’t use the digital tools aligned to standards efficiently (or at all).

  3. First things first: Guiding Questions • What does it mean to be literate? • What role do reading and writing play in your content area? • What is the role of digital content in literacy? • Think and write (5 minutes) • Turn and talk

  4. In 2011, Idaho Adopted the Common Core State Standards • These standards include literacy standards reading/writing for all subjects. • If you are a K-5 teacher, you do this already by reading and writing in science, math, social studies, health, art, etc.! • If you are a 6-12 teacher and you don’t know this yet, please don’t freak out!!!! Integrating literacy standards into contents is a process. We are in the middle of a multi-year transition toward the CCSS.

  5. So for those in the second group. . . • What is the “Common Core?” • The Common Core State Standards are a set of shared standards that states have the option to adopt (all but 2 states are adopters).

  6. What Subjects Are “Common Core” Subjects? • English Language Arts (ELA) • Math

  7. What Subjects Have State Content Standards? • Every other subject except Math and English Language Arts (ELA).

  8. What Subjects Have State Content Standards? • BUT. . .there are Common Core Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects (All Contents Except ELA) that will be added to your curriculum by 2013-2014!!!! • That means that most subjects now include a set of content area literacy standards (reading and writing), although many teachers include reading and writing in their instruction already. These standards recognize two things: • It takes a village to teach kids to be literate. • ELA people are bossy.  • Video: Common Core Literacy Standards Overview

  9. What standards do I look for when finding digital content aligned to my standards? • Check the Chart!

  10. Where do I find my standards? • K-12: Check the District’s website; look under “Curriculum” • Choose Your Level (Elementary, Middle, High) • Choose your content area • If you don’t know. . .ask!

  11. Activity • Locate a content/subject you wish to explore in Discovery Education • Locate your subject’s standards (CCSS or State Content Standards) • Search for content aligned to your standards within Discovery Ed. • What content is housed in Discovery Ed? • What is good? • What is great?
