Major parties Republicans Democrats Believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all.  Protects civil liberties and individual and human rights.  Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Called Liberals • Believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, traditional American values and a strong national defense.  • Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. • Generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems. • Called Conservatives

  3. Minor parties The Libertarian Party – stresses individual liberty: no taxes or foreign relations. The Prohibition National Committee – nationwide prohibition of the sale, distribution, and manufacturing of alcohol. The Socialist Labor Party – To get rid of capitalism and shift to the social ownership of production and distribution. The Green Party – Grassroot activists, environmentalists, social justice, and non-violent resistors The Tea Party – reduced government spending, opposition to taxation, reduction of the national debt, and an original interpretation of the Constitution.
