Standards Development Process Purpose: Establishes the organizational and procedural framework for developing ratifying, and maintaining TDWG standards Codify mechanisms to • Coordinate standards activities • Improve transparency and communication • Ensure critical review • Ensure consensus • Standards Lifecycle (maintain and retire)

  3. Organizational Entities • Interest Groups: • Evaluate the needs of TDWG members against available methods and technologies • Develop consensus around new approaches to information sharing • Create Task Groups to create specific products within specific time frames • Maintain and update products that continue to be useful

  4. Organizational Entities • Task Groups • Created within an Interest Group • To develop a particular product • Within a given time frame

  5. Charters & Review • Establishing an IG or TG requires an approved charter • Make intentions explicit (published) • Opportunity to coordinate activities (agreements in writing)

  6. Charters & Review • Maintenance of Interest Groups • Update charters as necessary (with approval) • Annual Review • Progress (develop consensus on approach) • Status of existing standards (use and maintenance) Active use, or replaced / retired

  8. Review of Specifications • Not tied to annual meeting • Expert Review • Public Review • Executive committee makes assessment of consensus
