Intro (Listen) • 1528 Askia the Great lost his power to his son Musa • Many areas along his border started to diminish Songhai’s power • Morocco suffered from attacks from Spain+ • They tried to take over Songhai’s salt mines • 1591 they destroyed Timbuktu and Gao with guns and cannons+ • Songhai lost its biggest source of income+ • Sending them to their end

  3. MoroccansInvade (take notes on * items) • *Moroccan’s wanted salt mines • Had arquebus (early gun) • *Needed money • Just had a war • Defeated Europeans

  4. Moroccans invade (continued) (take notes*) • It hurt them financially • Wanted to attack a wealthy place (Songhai) • *Army set out in 1591 • Some of the troops were Portuguese and Spanish+ • They agreed to fight • Well trained • *Had new weapons
