  3. Access to the Early Childhood Programs • State Funded Prekindergarten • Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) • Tuition Supported Prekindergarten

  4. State Funded Prekindergarten This state mandated program serves: • Children who are four years of age on or before September 1st, and • Children who are limited English speaking or • Children from families that qualify for free or reduced lunch or • Children who are military dependents • Children who meet the above criteria attend at no cost and are provided transportation from their neighborhood elementary campus.

  5. Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) This program serves: • Children between the ages of three and five who are eligible for special education services. • Campuses have assessment teams that determine eligibility for special education services. • Programming and service delivery is determined by the child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) • Students attend at no cost to family and transportation is provided to students in need.

  6. Tuition Supported Prekindergarten This programs serves: • PISD students who are three or four years of age on or before September 1st and • who do not qualify for either the PPCD or State Mandated Program. • Monthly tuition rates for 2006-2007 are • Five-day program $250.00 • Three-day program $150.00 • Transportation is not provided

  7. Head Start • Federally funded all-day program serving three and four-year-old students whose families are at or below the poverty level. • Program provides a variety of social services to the family • Program is provided at no cost to the family • Transportation from the student’s neighborhood elementary campus is provided.

  8. Chinese Bilingual Prekindergarten • This program serves three, four, and five-year-old English Language Learners, whose primary language is Chinese. • The program is provided at no cost to families. • Transportation from the student’s neighborhood elementary campus is provided to Harrington Elementary.

  9. Enrollment by Campus - 2006 • Barron ECS – 534 students • Beaty ECS – 349 students • Pearson ECS – 282 students • Head Start – 146 students • Chinese Bilingual – 56 students • Total ECS – 1,367 students

Student Scores • Reading – 487 students • 82% were not at risk for reading difficulty • 400 out of 487 students • 18% were still at risk for reading difficulty • 87 out of 487 students • Mathematics – 542 students • 82.5% were not at risk for mathematics difficulty • 447 out of 542 students • 17.5% were still at risk for mathematics difficulty • 95 out of 542

  12. District Survey • Sent to Kindergarten Team Leaders • Surveyed kindergarten readiness • Survey based on current kindergarten students who participated in the Early Childhood Programs

  13. Elementary Principal Comments “Our students who have had a PISD early childhood experience come with a solid foundation upon which we are able to continue their learning. This opportunity helps to level the playing field for our English Language Learners and those students who for economic reasons have not had the variety of exposures that many of our students experience.” Aaron Moeller, Principal, Weatherford Elementary

  14. Elementary Principal Comments “The prekindergarten schooled children are READY TO LEARN when they enter Forman compared to their non-schooled peers. These students have learned basic literacy and numeracy so we are not starting out in such a deficit position. They also have prior learning in basic routines and understand school-wide expectations. Our teachers can always spot a prekindergarten schooled student and use their prior experience as a model to unschooled children.” Ann Irvine, Principal, Forman Elementary
