What is a case manager?
  • A case manager is the person responsible for overseeing all aspects of a special education student’s program and services.
  • Case management responsibilities are in addition to and separate from direct instruction or direct service responsibilities.

What does the case manager do?
  • Monitors the IEP and facilitates services.
  • Is informed about the student’s program, progress and needs.
  • Communicates with parents, teachers and service providers.
  • Schedules annual reviews.
  • Initiates 3-year re-evaluations.
  • Ascertains that accommodations/modifications are provided as prescribed in the IEP.
  • Seeks assistance when concerns arise.
  • Sometimes supervises paraprofessionals.

  • The case manager does not supervise teachers or related services providers.
  • The case manager does not necessarily provide direct services to the student.

  • Special Education Classroom Teachers
  • Special Education Itinerant Teachers
  • Speech/Language Pathologists
  • Social Workers
  • Other professional personnel as determined to be appropriate by individual teams
