  2. Who were the romans? The Romans lived in Rome, a city in the center of the country of Italy .

  3. Legion • The Roman army was made up of groups of soldiers called legions. • There were over 5,000 soldiers in a legion.

  4. Different jobs • A legion had commanders, officers and ordinary soldiers. • There were also doctors, engineers and other workers

  5. The different sections of a Legion • Contubernium: consisted of 8 men. • Centuria: (century) was made up of 10 contubernium with a total of 80 men commanded by a centurion

  6. The different sections of a Legion • Cohorts: (cohort) included 6 centurie, a total of 480 men. • Legio: (Legion) consisted of 10 cohorts, about 5,000 men.

  7. The different sections of a Legion • EquesLegionis: Each legio had a cavarly unit of 120 attached to them.

  8. Contubernium • The smallest unit of the Roman legion was the contubernium (tent group) of eight men. • They marched, fought, worked and camped together. • In barracks, these eight men shared two rooms. On a march they shared a leather tent and a mule to carry it.

  9. Centuria • A century or centuria was made up of ten Contubernium - the essential fighting unit - which was led by a centurion. • A deputy centurion was called a Optio.

  10. Cohort • There were six centuriae (centuries) with a total of 480 fighting men (not including officers) in a cohort. The cohort was the basic fighting unit.

  11. Cavarly • A troop of 120 horsemen, who served as scouts and messengers were attached to each Roman legion

  12. Gladius- sword • The sword was very important. It was light and short (no more than 50 cm) so soldiers can use it for stabbing quickly

  13. Pilum- throwing spear • A soldier carried two spears to throw at the enemy. • The spears were just over two metreslong and they were designed to bend and stick in the enemy's shield so he cannot use it to protect himself.

  14. Pugio - dagger • The pugio was a small dagger used by Roman soldiers as a sidearm. • It was worn on left side.

  15. The Ballista • The ballista was a powerful ancient crossbow. • It fired iron tipped bolts towards the enemy positions.

  16. The Onager • The most powerful artillery piece in the Roman arsenal was the sling equipped Onager. • It could fire rocks of up to 150 lbs (70 kgs) to be used to smash through walls and fortifications.

  17. What were the rules • You had to be male and over 20. • They looked after you for 25 years. • And you were not allowed to get married.

  18. Boudicca • Queen Boudicca (born around 30 AD). • Queen Boudicca was the wife of the ruler of the Iceni, a Celtic tribe who lived in eastern England. • She was disliked the Romans.

  19. What did she do? • In revenge, Boudicca led an army to attack the Romans she lost and poisend herself.
