  6. Total Student Headcount Minority Students Percentage of Total NRIS 1,769 1,430 80.8% Non-Resident International Student (NRIS) Analysis by Country of Origin Facts in Brief 2003 In order to understand the true diversity of GMU it is necessary to understand that GMU is an international university. 135 countries are represented on campus and these international students bring a global perspective to the campus. Interactions between students help prepare US students for the future and the inevitable global society. There are 1,769 non-resident internationals students on campus, up from 1,686 students in 2002. Interestingly, 80.8% or 1, 430 students of these are students of color. Additional information about international students at GMU may be found in the University Factbook under “Non-Resident Aliens.” When the number of non resident international students of color is added to the population of American minorities on campus, the actual ethnic and racial diversity of GMU is increased to 32.7% of the total student population or more plainly, one of every three students you meet on campus will be a student of color. The percentage of minority enrollment of international students of color actually decreased over the last two years since 2001-02 academic year when it was 82% of international students. In the current academic year, as of Fall 2003, the percentage of international students of color is slightly lower or 80.8 %. The greatest change continues to be in the enrollment of American students of color here at Mason.

The number of employees grew by 350 over the F2002. Employees of color comprise 16% of Mason’s workforce, up 1% from last year. Since 1989, Mason has seen a growth in its workforce of 78% (1,548 employees since 1989). The majority of that change has been in the instructional faculty ranks (101% or 1015 employees) In addition, since 1989, the representation of employees of color has also increased by 170% (from 228 to 616 employees). Growth in our population of employees of color is in the right direction but is outpaced by the diversity of our student population. Since F2002, Mason has increased its African American employee population by 13% and similarly our Asian American population has increased 14% and the Hispanic American population by 15%, with extraordinarily large gains since 1989(138%, 320% and 204% respectively).
