  2. Internet Campus (IC) • IC lists all homework in the order that it is due • Assignment lists are not on my web site • Students and parents have different logins and passwords • IC lists your student’s percentage, missing assignments, and letter grade • The website will provide information about big projects, links, and downloads such as rubrics

  3. Student Advocacy • Students should be the first advocates when they have questions or concerns about assignments • Develops strong communication skills • Ensures that students are taking ownership of work • Students must use their school Outlook e-mail • Can access through AA site and ThinkLink 365 • Contains student Quia logins and passwords

  4. Locker Break • Breaks are provided mid-morning during block class time • Enables students to carry a limited number of items to classes • Eliminates the need for backpacks • Provides students a mid-morning snack to keep up energy until lunch (we encourage healthy snacks!)

My Education and Background • Bachelors in Elementary Education; First Masters in Professional Writing, 2nd Masters in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment • 1st year teaching at American Academy, 17th year teaching altogether • Taught grades 3-6, and then 6-11 Language Arts • Taught in public schools and in a homeschool program • Multiple tutoring jobs as well as work for ETS scoring teacher essays • Exchange Student Field Manager for three years working with high school foreign exchange students

English Grading • Writing and Grammar • 50% • Hake Grammar Book • Additional Writing Focus • Includes oral and listening skills • 6 Traits +1 Rubric Standard • Write to Learn Program (online) • Reading and Vocabulary • 45% • Novels • Realms of Gold (short stories & poetry) • Vocabulary from reading • Core Knowledge foreign vocabulary and commonly misspelled words • Classroom Participation • 5% • Preparedness – supplies • Participation – discussion, behavior, attention to procedures

Writing • Focus on informative, persuasive, and narrative • 6 Trait +1: Convention, Ideas, Organization, Sentences, Voice, Word Choice + Presentation • Peer Editing is always confidential • Note: Shift in standards puts major emphasis on supporting ideas using examples and explanation • New! Short response rubric will formalize how short answers are graded and encourage support with detail

  10. ABSENCES AND MISSING WORK • Absences: • 2 days to make up work for every day that they missed Missing Assignments: • Missing assignments will be posted to IC by 7:00pm at the latest on the due date • Late assignments: 1 day late 20% off; 2 days late 50% off; no credit thereafter • No extra credit, but I do offer bonus points on some tests and through the Reading Group Challenge

Homework Policy • Amount will vary • Assignments due at the beginning of class (unless told differently) • Time is given in class for work and questions • Use study hall and home room to follow up! • Effective use of in-school time will reduce the amount of homework at night • Help and encourage your students to use their planners. They are the first line for homework, then IC, the blog, and then me.
