Blake in 1988 • Army major…base operations officer at Hickam Field Hawaii during Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941…took charge of control tower • Saved 17 B-17s recovering from mainland • Awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action • Started keeping statistics in 1961

  8. Aircraft Save ProgramEligibility • AFI 36-2807 (dated, 29 Jan 02) • USAF ATC and “AM” • Other other military or civil ATC/AM at USAF operated or augmented facility or in ANG-unit facility

Aircraft Save ProgramDefinition of Save • AFI 36-2807 (dated, 29 Jan 02) • Safe recovery of an imperiled airborne aircraft • Help given to an endangered aircraft on the ground • Controller performance-beyond normal duty requirements • Services delivered in a professional manner • Probable damage would have resulted

Aircraft Save ProgramDefinition of Assist • AFI 36-2807 (dated, 29 Jan 02) • Not approved for Save Award, package will automatically be considered for an Assist Award • Units cannot submit a controller for an Assist Award • Same criteria as the Save Award except controller performance does not have to extend beyond normal duty requirements

Aircraft Save ProgramSave Board …How It Works • Composition • Chairperson • Manager (administrative) • ATC nominee: five enlisted ATCers/AOF officers and one aircrew member • AM nominee: five enlisted Amers/AOF officers and one aircrew member • Meets quarterly (more often if enough pkgs received) • Voting procedures • 6 voting board members • Chair only votes to break ties
