  5. What is a Trench? • A connected system of ditches dug by troops for protection.

  6. Why in the Trenches? • Because of new technology • Cannot fight out in the open all the time • War on Western Front turned into a stalemate (tie), so soldiers dig in.

  7. Trenches • Trenches prolonged the war as each side tried to break through the other’s trenches • High casualties • Land between the trenches was called “No Man’s Land”
