  1. Hola! Start a new journal. 2/17/14 Happy Valentine’s Day! Journal #1

  2. I still can’t talk very well, so . . . • Keep your voices low. • Pay attention to this screen because it will say what I can’t. • Please don’t make me speak loudly to get your attention. • Love ya!

  3. Journal Entry #1 • Imagine you just came into a BUNCH of money (lottery, inheritance, expensive painting hidden in the attic). What would be the first thing you do with that money? Would you be generous? Would you be cautious with it? Would you tell everyone? Or no one?

  4. Go to this link . . . • http://padlet.com/wall/thepearlcr2 • enter this pass code Crr2a (case sensitive)

  5. In a small group (assigned) • You will be assigned a topic to research • Your group will create a 4-5 slide Keynote as a presentation. • Each group member will be responsible for sharing a slide with the class.

  6. Topics • John Steinbeck • History of La Paz, Mexico • Mexican Indian – significant historical events/how they fit in Mexican society • How a pearl is formed • Parable – what is it? What do parables always have/not have? What are some famous parables? • Catholic culture in Mexico (mostly how did the Indians adopt it?)

  7. For presenting • Send me your Keynote AS A KEYNOTE, please. • When it is time for your group to come up, you need to all present at least one slide to the class. • Stop and ask if there are any questions when you are finished.

  8. Let’s look at the novella. • Open up to the first page. . . . • Discuss characters • Steinbeck’s introduction • As we read, look for evidence of the oppression that Kino and others like him experience. • We also learn about Kino’s “songs.” Try to figure out what Steinbeck means by this. • Begin reading Ch. 1 • Finish Ch. 1 for homework.

  9. Hola! • You should have read Ch.1 of The Pearl. • Courtland needs to take the test! • Handing back papers. • Discuss Unit test. • Make corrections to short answer section. • Journal #2 • Small group presentations • Partner work • Discuss and begin Ch. 2

  10. Journal #2 • Tell me something important that happened in chapter 1. Give a 2-3 sentence summary. • What do you think Kino’s “songs” could be? Give your best guess.

  11. With a partner (chosen for you) • I will give you a piece of computer paper to put your work. Put BOTH OF YOUR NAMES ON IT. • On one side create a diagram/spider map/whatever you want – to point out examples of the oppression that Kino experiences just in the first chapter. Draw pictures (stick is fine) to go with each one. • On the back, create a T-chart explaining how the doctor sees the situation with Coyotito vs. how Kino and Juana see it. • Be prepared to share.

  12. Share out

  13. Ch. 1 discussion • What point of view is this being told? • What could the “songs” be?

  14. Begin Ch. 2 • Continue to highlight sections that demonstrate oppression. • Pay attention to the “songs” as you read. They are frequently helpful in understanding Kino. • Finish Ch.2 for homework.

  15. Journal #3 2/21/14 • What big event happened in Ch. 2? Predict what you think will happen next in the story.

  16. Padlet: Share out

  17. Discussion Chapter 2 • What is the mood at the beginning of this chapter? • After being rejected by the doctor, what is Kino and Juana’s only hope? • What does Juana do to help Coyotito? How effective is it? Why is she worried it isn’t enough? (Hint: this is evidence of oppression/discrimination!) • What is the mood at the end of this chapter? • We are 1/3 of the way through the book. What theme(s) seem to be developing?

  18. PHSiTeach • Documents: Vocabulary 1 • On a computer paper, create a WIDE vocab sheet. • W – word • I – illustration • D – definition • E – example sentence

  19. Chapter 3 • We will begin the reading together. • Continue to highlight sections that demonstrate oppression/discrimination. • Finish for homework.

  20. Results of Teacher Evaluation • Most people like this class (yay!) • Things you like: IR books, book projects, partner work, using Padlet • Things you don’t like: book reviews, summer reading(I didn’t do that!), Dr. Jecky and Mr. Hyde, WIDE • Suggestions: go outside, choose partners more often, field trip, games that link to our novels, choosing books for small groups • Annoying stuff: the long ssshhhhhhhhh! • Do I care about you as a student and person? Mostly yes, a few “sort of”s, and one “eh . . .”

  21. Journal #4 • “And my son will make numbers, and these things will make us free because he will know – he will know and through him we will know.” • What does Kino mean by this? How will this make them free? • You may look at your book if that jogs your memory • When you are finished with your journal entry, go to Padlet to share your answer.

  22. Ch. 3 • What does Kino hope to do with the riches he will get from the pearl? • Who brought the music of evil with them? • Kino feels intense hatred when the doctor firsts arrives. Why does he let the doctor in to check on Coyotito? • What “trap” was set? • How were Kino and Juana attacked? • What does Juana want to do to fix this situation? • What mood does the chapter end with?

  23. Kino’s Dreams • Get married in the church • Buy new clothes for the family • A harpoon • A rifle • Coyotito would go to school • If he can make all of this come true, how will it change his life?

  24. The Pearl Dealers • There is an “arrangement” among the pearl dealers. • There is only ONE owner of ALL the pearl stores. • There are 3 buyers, but they all work for the same person. • What does this mean if you want to sell a pearl? • Pg 31 in my download – 2nd page of the chapter

  25. THE TERRIBLE SCAM!!!!!!!! Pearl Dealer (owns all the stores) Pearl Buyer #2 Pearl Buyer #1 Pearl Buyer #3 Kino and his pearl (and every other pearl diver for several generations)

  28. Journal #5 • Have you ever been cheated or had someone try to take advantage of you? Did it work? Did you realize what they were up to, or did you find out later? • Todaysmeet.com

  29. Chapter 4 • What is the mood at the beginning of the chapter? (Get out your handout so we can use big words for this) • What story does Juan Tomas tell Kino about selling pearls? Why is this story important? What do WE learn from this story? • How do the 3 pearl buyers try to trick Kino? • What is the plan at the end of chapter 4? What is the mood? (use big words!)

  30. Let’s take a look. . . • Open up your books to chapter 4

  33. Journal #6 • Describe the changes in Kino that we have witnessed. How is he different from the man at the beginning of the story? • Padlet.com/wall/thepearlch5

  34. Ch. 5 Projects • Go to PHSiTeach documents • There is a list of possible projects. • You have class time to work on them today. If you are doing this correctly, it will take most or even more than the time provided. • If you are not finished when I call for you to stop, then it needs to be finished for homework and turned in next class.

  35. Ch. 6 (final chapter) • Pay close attention to what happens as Kino works to protect his family. • Think about what greed has done to this family. • Finish for homework.

  39. Let’s check the end of the story.

  40. Create a virtual timeline • Download the app: RWT timeline (free) • Create an account • Create a timeline of events for The Pearl. • Choose 3 major events from each chapter. • PREDICT 3 major events that woul most likely happen if there was a chapter 7. • TOTAL events: 21 • Save as a photo and then send it to me.

  41. Big Ideas: • How does greed affect nearly everyone in the story? • Does money buy happiness for those that have/attain it? • How does racism keep Kino and the rest of the natives in poverty? • Any one of these questions will be on the test. You will need to be able to refer to specific events in the story to support your answer?
