  1. 3.1.3 – Making informed decisions; Emotional health and well being Learning objectives To understand why schools have anti-bullying policies. To be able to describe behaviour rewards and why they are used. To gain an understanding of pastoral systems that exist and why.

  2. Emotional health and well-being As a part of the national healthy schools programme schools should promote a positive attitude towards emotional health. By building confidence and emotional strength pupils should increase their capacity to learn.

  3. 1. Vulnerable groups Helping vulnerable pupils can help health and educational issues by instilling confidence in themselves. Schools can put in place pastoral support systems and care plans. Heads of Year are usually responsible for this and can identify those at risk. Some pupils may experience behavioural, emotional or social difficulties at some point in their school life.

  4. 2. Bullying Policies Everyone at school should be aware of anti-bullying policies. Often pupils have an input into the policy and discuss elements as part of PHSE. TASK: What is your school’s bullying policies involve?

  5. 3. Behaviour and rewards policies To promote positive behaviour at school, many institutes will have a rewards policy. They should be clearly stated to the pupils and achievable. Rewards can take different forms and may be anything from merit stickers to reward trips. TASK: What reward policies does your school have?

Confidential pastoral systems • Pastoral systems are in place to look after the welfare of students. • These systems help pupils deal with bereavements or life changing events. • Every child matters is a government agenda that says: • Be healthy • Stay safe • Enjoy and achieve • Make a positive contribution • Achieve economic well-being

  7. Summary Questions: Describe the aim of an anti-bullying policy? How do heads of year help pupils in your school? How do school reward good behaviour? If you were in charge of rewards, what would you like to see in place? (bear in mind budget constraints)
