  1. Understanding the Employment Rules for Hiring a Maid in Singapore Are you planning to hire a domestic helper for the first time? Hiring a housekeeper is not only for the rich and famous, everyone could really hire a maid to get a helping hand in keeping the house in great shape. Whether you need cleaning and cooking services, want a maid to look after your kids, or a caring person to take care of your elderly parents, hiring a helper through the best maid agency is also a practical way to manage your time more efficiently. So, if you’re looking for a maid right now, you must know the employment rules set by the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore. • To hire a maid for your domestic chores, make sure the foreign domestic worker (FDW) has a valid Work Permit. If you employ a maid without a valid Work Permit, you will be fined $5,000 to $30,000 or imprisonment for up to 1 year, or both. • Employers can make helpers perform only domestic chores. You will be penalised with a fine of up to $10,000 if you make your helper work for other people or do other chores. • During the application for a work permit, employers must mention their residential address where the helper will have to work. Helpers cannot work anywhere else other than the address mentioned in the application form. You can place your FDW to another location only if it is about taking care of your young children or elderly parents. • Employers cannot make or allow their maid to take on any part-time job. • Employers must provide at least 3 nutritious meals per day and the same amount of food as they would need for themselves. • Employers must provide a separate room to their helpers that has enough space, privacy, ventilation, and no unsafe structures. • Domestic workers must be given one rest day every week. The agreed-upon rest day can be included in the employment contract for avoiding disputes. • Employers must provide medical and personal accident insurance coverage for their maids. Hiring the right maid for your needs involves a lot of regulations and processes. As an employer, you will have to deal with paperwork, medical examination, insurance, and work permit as well. A helper agency in Singapore plays a crucial link between employers and FDWs as it takes care of everything when you recruit a maid from a foreign country. The best maid agency can definitely make the task of hiring a maid easier and help you pick the right one for your needs.
