  1. PICES 2013 Group 2 Question How do nutrients and inorganic carbon parameters vary along a salinity gradient?

  2. Hypotheses – Production-dominated estuary Nutrients: Nutrients will be consumed within the estuary due to high levels of production. (nonlinear response with salinity) Alkalinity: Alkalinity will not be consumed within the estuary. (linear response with salinity) TCO2: TCO2 will be generated within the estuary. (nonlinear response with salinity) Others: Nonlinear response with salinity since TCO2 is consumed.

  3. Methods – Collect samples for determination of nutrient concentrations, TCO2, and pCO2 along a salinity gradient in Yaquina Bay. (ebb versus flood tide) Analyze samples with Burkelator and nutrient analyzer at Oregon State. Assemble data. (lots and lots of qc & some bad data) Plot parameters of interest as a function of salinity (temp also conservative during sampling).

  13. Conclusions– During ebb tide, TCO2 and PO4 consumed in estuary . This indicates net production within estuarine environment. Less apparent (if at all) during flood tide. No apparent calcification/dissolution signal. Future work – more extensive sampling, explore differences with depth.
