  1. LEQ: How can I apply what I learned about the phases of the Moon? REVIEW Key Terms: phases, waxing, waning

  2. It Doesn’t Phase Me! • In this activity, you will viewing illustrations of the Phases of the Moon. You will then try your best to identify the: • The Full and the New Moon Phases. • The Waxing and Waning Phases of the Moon. • The Crescent, Quarter, and Gibbous Phases of the Moon. • Some of the specific Phases of the Moon. • The correct order of sequence of the Phases of the Moon.

  3. Preparation (do this before going onto slide 4) • To prepare, review “Exploring Phases of the Moon” on page 26 of the Astronomy textbook.

  4. Identifying Phases of the Moon:New Moon and Full Moon • 1. Which of the above is the New Moon (0% of the Moon’s disk illuminated) phase? • 2. Which of the above is the Full Moon (100% of the Moon’s disk illuminated) phase? 1 2

  5. Identifying Phases of the Moon: Waxing or Waning • 3. Which 3 are the waxing phases? • 1 4 and 5 1 2 3 4 5 6

  6. Identifying Phases of the Moon: Waxing or Waning • 4. Which 3 are the waning phases? • 2 3 and 6 1 2 3 4 5 6

  7. Identifying Phases of the Moon: Crescent(s), Quarter(s), and Gibbous(s) • 5. Which 2 are the crescent (25% of the Moon’s disk illuminated) phases? • 2 and 4 1 2 3 4 5 6

  8. Identifying Phases of the Moon: Crescent(s), Quarter(s), and Gibbous(s) • 6. Which 2 are the quarter (50% of the Moon’s disk illuminated) phases? • 1 and 3 1 2 3 4 5 6

  9. Identifying Phases of the Moon: Crescent(s), Quarter(s), and Gibbous(s) • 7. Which 2 are the gibbous (75% of the Moon’s disk illuminated) phases? • 5 and 6 1 2 3 4 5 6

  10. Identifying Specific Phases of the Moon • 8. Which is the Waning Gibbous phase? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

  11. Identifying Specific Phases of the Moon • 9. Which is the Waxing Gibbous phase? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

  12. Identifying Specific Phases of the Moon • 10. Which is the First Quarter phase? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

  13. Identifying Specific Phases of the Moon • 11. Which is the Waning Crescent phase? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

  14. Identifying Phases of the MoonThe Specific Phase • 12. What phase is illustrated above? • Full Moon

  15. Identifying Phases of the MoonThe Specific Phase • 13. What phase is illustrated above? • Third or Last Quarter

  16. Identifying Phases of the MoonThe Specific Phase • 14. What phase is illustrated above? • Waxing Crescent

  17. Identifying Phases of the Moon:The Sequence • 15. Beginning with the New Moon phase, place the phases in their correct order. First Quarter New Moon Waning Crescent Third Quarter Waxing Crescent Full Moon Waxing Gibbous Waning Gibbous

  18. Moon Phases Activity • Pick up a copy of the Labeling the Phases of the Moon Diagrams Activity sheet. • Use this slide show and your textbook as references. • Complete both sides of the activity sheet. • Spelling counts.

  19. Conclusion • How well were you able to identify the phases? • Make sure to turn in your Labeling the Phases of the Moon Activity sheet when complete.
