  3. 5  For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7  Therefore do not be partakers with them; 8  for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 9  (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10  trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

  4. 6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Let no one deceive you with empty words deceive - apataō - to beguile, deceive or seduce into error present tense - continuous action see 1 Tim 2:14, James 1:26 Let no one keep on deceiving you (Wuest) empty - kenos – hollow; empty words meaning false words, deceitful - see Col. 2:8; The pronoun youis emphatic. “You, of all people, should not allow yourselves to become the victims of deceit.” McCalley

  5. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. for because of these things What does “these things” refer to? the wrath of God wrath - of God as utter abhorrence to sin but longing mixed with grief for those who live in it John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." also Rom 1:18 God’s wrath never comes on those in Christ Jesus see Rom 8:1

  6. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. comes upon the “sons of disobedience” The verb comes is present tense, showing that God’s wrath on these things is already on the way and will continue until the offenders have been dealt with. McCalley The word “sons" is huios, a Hebraism, calling a person having a certain quality, a son of that quality. Wuest disobedience - lit., the condition of being unpersuadable see Rom 11:30-32 Col 3:6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, (see v:5)

  7. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them Therefore do not be partakers with them be -gínomai – coming into a new state of being, could be translated “become” present tense partakers - symmetochos - partaking together with or joint-partaker - see Eph 3:6 The word (symmetochos)denotes casting one’s lot with someone. To fellowship with them is to participate in their sins and the punishment connected with it. McCalley Stop therefore becoming joint-participants with them (Wuest)

  8. 8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light for – gar - expressing the reason for what has been before in the sense of because and so forth you were – eimi – the state in which someone or something continuously exist (continuous action in past time) formerly – pote – once or at one time darkness - skotos - spiritual darkness (ignorance, sin and misery) as well as persons in such a state - “this noun identifies the subject you” Paul does not say they lived in darkness; he says they were darkness. McCalley for you were at one time darkness (Wuest)

  9. 8  for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light but now - on the contrary, now (at this time) – Eph 2:13 you are (implied verb) - este - second person plural present indicative of eimi light -phōs – a metaphor of the Lord Jesus as the illuminator of men and God’s righteousness (this noun identifies the subject you) Conversely, he (Paul) does not say they now live in light, but they are light. McCalley

  10. 8  for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light in the Lord - it’s not our light but Christ’s light! walk as children of Light walk - peripateō - figuratively, signifying the whole round of the activities of the individual life - Eph 2:10; 4:1 (present tense, continuous action) as children of light be habitually conducting yourselves Wuest Religion says, “Do in order to become”; Christianity says, “Do because you are.” Walk in light because you are light; let your position be your practice. McCalley

  11. 9  (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), for the fruit of the Light (Holy Spirit) see Gal 5:22 – fruit of the Spirit consists in or is in the sphere Light is known by its effects! - McCalley all (in every form of) goodness– which incorporates the idea of benevolent generosity all (in every form of)righteousness- is the character or quality of being right or just all (in every form of)truth- reality; the unveiled reality lying at the basis of and agreeing with an appearance

  12. 10  trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. trying to learn - lit: proving - to test, prove, with the expectation of approving see Rom 12:2 what is pleasing to the Lord pleasing - well-pleasing, acceptable when used with reference to God – Rom 12:1-2, Col 3:20 notice this is to the Lord not men! putting to the test and then approving what is well pleasing to the Lord Wuest
