Background • District Annual Utility Budget - $2.6 million • Approximately $200/student • Utilities are a “controllable cost” • Since 2006 BCPS has avoided over $800,000 in utility costs “Energy efficient schools not only help save the environment and taxpayer dollars, but they also help improve the health and education of Kentucky's children. ” KY Dept. of Energy Development and Independence (DEDI)

Step 1 – Building Your Team • Students • Typically between 3 and 10 students (at your discretion) • Reliable and Trustworthy • Consider an application & recommendation process • Interested in Energy, Environment, Math, Science, Engineering, etc. • Administrator and Custodian • Important to have buy-in • Do not have to attend all meetings

Step 1 - Continued • Energy Manager • Available to attend meetings as needed • Technical Support • Optional – Parents, Community Partner, Other Teachers Forms used for Step 1 • Student Application and Recommendation- Forms A &B (Optional) • Team Attendance Record – Form C • Meeting Minutes – Form D (NEW)

Step 2 – Auditing your Building • Baseline Audit to assess current habits • Create a plan for monthly building patrols • Complete Shutdown Checklists, or coordinate the completion by custodial staff Forms used for Step 2 • Baseline Audit - Form E • Patrol Record – Form F • Patrol Record Summary Report – Form G • Shutdown Checklists – Form H, I, J, K

Step 3 – Raising Awareness and Educating • Create an Energy Awareness Poster • Can be made by team or a school-wide contest • Send poster to Central Office by October 14th to have copies made to distribute to schools • Must be 11x17 in order to be copied • Energy Assembly • Could be a broadcast/commercial • Awareness Materials • Door Hangers for Patrols • Classroom Checklist • Stickers • NEED Resources for Education

Step 4 – School Building Survey • NEED’s “School Building Survey” Available in Appendix for Background Information • Plug Load Survey • Use NEED’s “Kill A WattTM Investigations” in Appendix • Survey will allow the students to see what uses energy in their school and how much. • Use data for awareness and for potential energy saving projects • Light Level Survey • Use NEED’s“Light Level Investigations” in Appendix • Use data for awareness and for potential energy saving projects

Step 5 – Project Planning • Set Goals (at least 2 required for awards) • Involve Administration • Assign Tasks • Grants Available through NEED and KGHS • Project Ideas • Additional Awareness and Education Activities • Vending Misers • Incandescent to CFL Replacement • Repurposing Scrap Paper • Planting Trees • Others? Step 6 – Project Implementation • Review work plans and assigned tasks. • Double check on any necessary approvals. • Evaluate Your Project • Provide a summary or overall evaluation • Was your project more/less impactful than you planned?   11. Recognition Any team that submits project documentation by April 6th will be recognized at a ceremony in May! • Include Team Roster (Form C) • Any other documentation from steps you complete. • Take pictures! But wait! There’s more…

Energy Watchdog Leaders Awards • Bronze ($300): Complete Steps 1 – 3 of the Energy Watchdog Program • Silver ($500): Complete Steps 1-4 of the Energy Watchdog Program • Gold ($800): Complete Steps 1-6 of the Energy Watchdog Program **Because of the nature of the grant, money cannot be given directly to the school. Teams must work with their school administration prior to April 6thto decide what your school will use the award money for. You will submit the information to the Energy Manager who will then make the purchase for the school. It is encouraged that the funds be used for purposes related to energy/environment/sustainability.**

More Opportunities for Recognition • NEED Youth Awards for Energy Achievement • Energy Watchdog activities qualify • All student teams that submit a project are recognized at a ceremony in Frankfort • Kentucky Green and Healthy Schools • Recognized at the same ceremony as the NEED awards. • http://www.greenschools.ky.gov/
