Making Tens • Number talks are a great way for students to use mental math to solve problems, explain their thinking, and have mathematical debates. A Number Talk is a short, ongoing daily routine that provides students with meaningful ongoing practice with computation. • Math Centers- provide an opportunity for small group instruction and differentiation • Journaling

English Language Arts In English Language Arts, there are three major comprehension objectives: • Reading Foundational (print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics & word recognition, fluency) • Conventions of Standard English (grammar skills: nouns, verbs, adjectives, sentence structure, etc. • Vocabulary Acquisition and Use (multiple meaning words, using context clues, shades of meaning, prefixes/suffixes, etc.

  7. This is a table for monitoring progress of Instructional Reading Level and growth. Instructional level means it can be read with instructional support. Henry County Schools are using Fountas & Pinnell to monitor and track your child’s reading growth. This table only shows First grade levels. Students will be assessed a minimum of 3 times a year. Extra support in weak areas will be given if he/she is below grade level expectations as well as progress monitoring assessments. How can you help at home? • Have your child to read daily for 15 minutes • As your child is reading, ask them various questions to monitor comprehension and have them to retell/summarize what they’ve read • Practice reading the weekly sight words • Model fluency sounds like Grade Level Reading Expectations
