What We Do UNDP-UNEP Poverty- Environment Initiative Support governments to: Integrate environmental sustainability into national, development plans, such as the PRPSs, in support of poverty alleviation and economic growth Build national capacity to: Identify contribution of environment to poverty reduction and pro-poor growth Effectively integrate environmental management into national development processes, including budgeting and investment plans

UNDP-UNEP Poverty- Environment Initiative • History • UNDP Poverty-Environment Initiative • Grew out of WSSD • Supported by DFID and EC UNEP Poverty-Environment Project Supported by Norway, Belgium and Sweden • Joint UNDP-UNEP Poverty Environment Initiative, formed 2007 • Donors collectively agreed to support significant scale-up of PEI Joint UNDP-UNEP programming, budgeting and staff recruitment Leading example of UN interagency co-operation UNDP-UNEP Poverty Environment Facility, formed 2007 Supporting PEI scale-up, knowledge management, technical advisory services

UNDP-UNEP Poverty- Environment Initiative • MoU signed between UNDP and UNEP in 2005 to enhance collaboration in areas of common interest (3 areas: climate change, poverty and environment initiatives and other environmental endeavors). • PEI brings together the environmental capacity and networks of UNEP - with the UNDP’s expertise and capacity to support country-led processes via its CO presence. • Partnerships with Ministries of Environment, Ministries of Planning and Development and Ministries of Finance. • There are significant opportunities to link PEI with the MDG Achievement Fund, to help countries accelerate progress towards the MDGs. • PEI is working within the wider context of One UN pilots and UNDAF processes

UNDP-UNEP Poverty- Environment Initiative PEI: Regions and Countries • Africa • UNDP-UNEP regional PEI team in Nairobi • 10 country programmes: Burkina Faso, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana • Asia • UNDP-UNEP Regional PEI team in Bangkok • Country programmes established in Vietnam and Bhutan • Target to launch PEI activities in : Bangladesh, Laos, Cambodia, Nepal and East-Timor

UNDP-UNEP Poverty- Environment Initiative PEI: Regions and Countries • Latin America • Joint UNDP-UNEP team based in Panama • Regional PEI programme launched in May 2008. • Europe/CIS • Joint UNDP-UNEP team based in Geneva/Bratislava • Regional PEI programme launched in June 2008. Experience in country PEI programmes has led to key lessons learned, created model for mainstreaming environment into development processes
