MYP Pre-auth Report The pre-authorisation report reflections are drawn from the IB visitors assessment of how the programme is developing against the IBO Standards and Practices document which is used to benchmark practice across all three IB programmes; These reflections are compiled following a detailed review of the school’s documentation and from interviews conducted with all the major programme stakeholders … students, teachers, admin., parents, members of the board, etc.

  3. MYP Pre-auth Report The descriptors for each Standard are outlined in this presentation, along with the recommendations made by the IBO representative following the Stonehill visit; Those recommendations to be considered within the May 17 PD Day are highlighted in orange; [note that this is should be seen as a beginning!] A full report of our progress towards addressing these recommendations has to be submitted by the MYP Coordinator to the IBO by November 2010;

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard A: Philosophy Standard A1 : There is a close alignment between the educational beliefs and values of the school and the fundamental principles of the MYP; Standard A2 : The school promotes international-mindedness on the part of the adults and the students in the school community;

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard A2 Recommendations are that the School: Carries out plans to bolster the school’s resources which offer access to different cultures, perspectives and languages as indicated in the MYP development plan; Initiates strategies to emphasize the importance to language learning through the development of students’ mother tongues and acquisition of other languages possibly including the host country language; Reviews the means and level of support given to members of its community for whom the school’s language of instruction is not their mother tongue;

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard B : Organisation Standard B1 : The school demonstrates ongoing commitment to , and provides support for, the programme through appropriate administrative structures and systems, staffing and resources; Standard B1 Recommendations are that the school: Develops systems for implementing and monitoring the programme with input from all constituencies, including students; Ensures that the school goals, strategies, timelines and accountabilities are available to all members of the community;

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard B 1 Recommendations continued … Ensures that time for collaborative planning and reflection is built into all MYP teachers schedules; Expands on its collection of print and electronic resources to support the teaching and learning of the programme; Completes and ratifies a school-wide language policy which reflects IB guidelines prior to the request for an authorisation visit; Further develops structures to ensure the effective implementation of the areas of interaction; [to be considered within Faculty groups] Considers developing formal organizational structures to ensure the coordination of the curriculum within the MYP subject groups;

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C: Curriculum Standard C1 : A comprehensive, coherent, written curriculum, based on the requirements of the programme and developed by the school, is available to all sections of the school community; Standard C 1 Recommendations are that the school: Further develops written curriculum documents to ensure that they are comprehensive and coherent and available in written form to all sections of the school community; Ensures that the curriculum articulates with the PYP and DP; [needs to be done in consultation with PYP, esp. P8 and the DP, esp. DP1]

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C 1 Recommendations are that the school: Ensures that the school’s curriculum documentation clearly identifies the skills, concepts, knowledge and attitudes to be taught over time in a format which is consistent between different subject areas; [Faculty Groups] Completes the process of modifying subject specific objectives and assessment criteria for years 1-4 of the MYP to ensure the curriculum places appropriate demands on students; [Faculty Groups] Both for consideration by Faculty groups.

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C1 recommendations continued … Ensures that the curriculum encourages students to develop strategies for their own learning and assessment, and to assume increasing levels of responsibility; Develops a formal curriculum review process to ensure that the curriculum reflects the latest programme developments;

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C1 recommendations continued … Explores ways to support the development of the mother-tongue language resources in the Library and the offering of alternative Language A courses or mother tongue course options where feasible; Ensures that the holistic education initiatives are contextualized and focused through the student learning expectations of the Areas Of Interaction [to be considered within Faculty groups];

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C1 recommendations continued … Ensures that the Areas Of Interaction are further developed within and across the academic disciplines, so that students acquire an understanding of each;[Faculty and AOI Groups] Develops clear objectives [student learning expectations] for each Area Of Interaction using the student learning expectations published in the IB document “From Principles into Practice” as a starting point;[To be considered within Faculty groups]

  13. MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C2 : The School has implemented a system through which all teachers plan and reflect in collaborative teams: Standard C2 Recommendations are that the school: Further develops common understandings amongst staff as to the agreed expectations with regard to planning and the use of the MYP Planner; Further develops common understandings of interdisciplinary learning in order to strengthen cross-curricular skills and deepen the understanding of wider concepts through meaningful and focused integration;

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C2 Recommendations continued: Ensures that planning at the school includes coordination of the five areas of interaction from years 1 to 5 to ensure progression of learning through the development of student learning for each area of interaction; [consideration through AOI group discussion] Ensures that planning at the school includes the co-ordination of the curriculum within each subject group

  15. MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C3 : Teaching and learning at the school empowers and encourages students to become lifelong learners, to be responsible towards themselves, their learning, other people and the environment, and to take appropriate action: Standard C3 Recommendations are that the school: Considers strategies to support the development of the language of instruction [English] through an MYP Language B framework; Ensures that the teaching and learning at the school promotes the understanding and practice of academic honesty by developing a school-wide academic honesty policy;

MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C4 : There is an agreed approach to assessment, and to the recording and reporting of assessment data, which reflects the practices and requirements of the programme. Standard C4 Recommendations are that the school: Reviews and ratifies its draft assessment policy to ensure that it reflects MYP assessment principles and practice; Ensures learning expectations and integral assessment strategies are made clear to students and parents; Formalizes the provision of opportunities for peer and self assessment using the MYP subject-specific criteria which are appropriately modified for each year of the programme [considered by Faculty groups];

  17. MYP Pre-auth Report Standard C4 Recommendations Continued … Refines the reporting process to ensure the communication of meaningful data to parents with regard to student’s progress. A clear connection between reported subject-specific criterion totals and the corresponding achievement level must be established; Further develops common understandings of MYP assessment principles and practice between teachers at various grade levels and subject areas [faculty groups]; Formalizes opportunities for teachers/supervisors to participate in the internal standardization of assessment both vertically and horizontally within subject groups and the Personal Project;

  18. MYP Pre-auth Report Standard D : The Student Standard D1: Students learn to choose to act, and to reflect on their actions, so that they contribute to their own well being and that of the community and the environment; Standard D1 Recommendations are that the school: Develops the student learning expectations for community and service as an Area Of Interaction so as to ensure a progression of learning [AOI Group]; Frames Community and Service requirements using qualitative rather than qualitative means possibly through the student learning expectations of Community and Service Area of Interaction;

  19. MYP Pre-auth Report Standard D2 : In the final year of the programme, all students complete a programme-specific project that allows them to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning, in the case of the PYP and MYP, and to demonstrate the extension and development of their learning in the Diploma programme; Standard D2 Recommendations are that the school: Further develops the understanding of all staff with regards to the nature of the Personal Project, responsibilities of supervisors and the work expected from the students; Ensures all supervisors participate in the standardization of assessment;

  20. MYP Pre-auth Report The Pre-auth report gives us some clear focus points for our professional development/curriculum development over the next 12 months and acknowledges the commendable efforts of MYP staff in developing the programme so far.
