What is a parent council? • Parental Involvement Act • Made changes to parental representation in schools • August 2007 saw the introduction of the Parent Council • All parents and carers with children at Bonnyrigg Primary School AND Nursery Class are automatically members • Parent Council is the body elected by the Parent Forum

  5. Why have a parent council? • Children achieve more and behave better when their parents are actively involved in their education • Concerns can be resolved more quickly when parents have a positive relationship with the school • Parents benefit • Express your views and make a difference • Meeting with and working with other parents and teachers • We can all support our children with their learning

  6. What does a parent council do? • Support the school in its work with pupils • Represent the views of all parents • Encourage links between the school, parents, pupils, pre-school groups and the wider community • Report back to all the parents in the school • Play a role in the appointment of head teachers and depute head teachers • Support the school and pupils during school inspections

  7. What is the role of the chair? • To agree time and dates of meetings with Secretary/Head Teacher • To agree the agenda with the Head Teacher • Items submitted in advance by any parent/carer • To conduct the meeting • Welcome members and introduce guests • Ensure everyone has the chance to have their say • Sum up issues, discussion points and actions • Ensure actions are carried out • Casting vote where necessary
