  27. LINC : Library’s Online Catalogue Covers allresources in all seven NUS Libraries Electronic books & journals DEMO

  28. Most common: CL Books: at Central Library Level 3 Call #: “Address” of the book : which part of Level 3 Most common: Available: not borrowed out

  29. LINC -Book required is electrical engineering by S. Elangovan -Problem: It has a common title

  30. LINC Click here to Limit 173 titles

  31. LINC Default is Words in TITLE. Change that to Words in AUTHOR. Key in Elangovan, click Submit.

  35. LINC+ : Library’s Online Catalogue with Web 2 features Type in terms here, e.g. Electric cars

  36. LINC+ via NUS Libraries Website Subject headings of books in list Electric cars: default is keyword search 45 hits, some irrelevant

  37. LINC+ via NUS Libraries Website 6 relevant hits

  38. LINC+ via NUS Libraries Website • Which Library • Publication date • Etc 45 hits

  39. Useful Call Numbers • Broad Subjects Call No. Range • Engineering T-TS • Computer Science QA75.5 – QA76.9

  40. Learning Outcomes • Overview of NUS Libraries • Library Portal • Exam papers & your reading list • Check if Library has particular book/journal, etc • Check if Library has books, etc on a subject • Find journal articles, etc. for research topic • Keep track of your Library account • How to order items • Get help • Subject guide • 3D Tour of Library

  41. } InfoGate InfoGate: Use with caution Find Journal Articles, etc for Research : UseMajor Index Databases • Better than Google Scholar • Electronic index databases with links to full text for some, not all articles • Engineering Village 2 (EV2) • Scopus • Web of Science

  42. Library InfoGate • Results not sorted by number of hits or relevance • you have to scroll down to see which database yields the most hits and check allhits in each database to see if they are relevant or not. The most relevant hit could be listed last • Default maximum no. of hits shown is 40 • Some features in individual databases (e.g. controlled terms) are not supported • no. of hits per database might not be as high as you would get from searching individual databases one at a time

  43. Library InfoGate • Searches across a few databases including LINC (i.e. retrieves records for both journal articles and books) • Good starting point if you do not know which database to use

  44. Library InfoGate http://lib.nus.edu.sg/lion/infogate/index.html 1) Key in Search Term 2) Choose Search Field 3) Choose Category One option isBest Bets

  45. Library InfoGate http://lib.nus.edu.sg/lion/infogate/index.html

  46. Research Topic Use of biomaterial in dental applications

  47. Before Using Databases • Need to construct a proper search statement • Identify terms to key in • Use Boolean operators OR, AND • For Engineering Village 2, use their controlled terms

  48. Concept 1 Concept 2 Identify Terms to Key in Search Statements 1. Find concepts Use of biomaterials in dental applications 2. Think of alternative term/s for each concept Dental: tooth, teeth Biomaterial* biomaterial*represents biomaterial, biomaterials

  49. Boolean Operators ORrepresents a union of sets. The resulting set gets bigger. Set A: Fruits Apple Orange Set B: Vegetables Lettuce Tomato Set A OR Set B: AppleOROrange ORLettuce OR Tomato

  50. Set A AND Set B Boolean Operators ANDrepresents an intersection of sets. The resulting set gets smaller. Fruits AND Vegetables Tomato (Apple OrangeLettuce Tomato)
