HOW SULPHATION WRECKS BATTERIES AND ALTERNATORS • Battery becomes difficult to charge (high internal resistance) • Battery never becomes fully charged –remains undercharged • The lead oxide (PbO) paste on the battery plates becomes soft • Soft paste falls out more quickly, especially on heavy construction vehicles where vibration aids this process • Soft paste becomes sludge which shorts out the battery • Alternators run at continuous high power in an attempt to force charge into the battery –overheating, premature failure • Battery is overheated by the high current and internal resistance (Heat = power dissipated = I2R) • Heat boils off electrolyte- frequent topping up or battery runs dry • Heat warps plates- causing short-circuit and battery failure c
