  1. Chapter 11 By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Published 1902 Artwork by: ?

  2. Sleuth Journal Check • Open your Sleuth Journal to the current chapter for a check of your progress. Artwork by: ?

  3. Discussion • What is Laura Lyons’s alibi for the night of the murder? Does Watson believe her story? • Who is the man on the Tor, and how is his identity revealed? • Predict: Why was he hiding on the moor?

  4. Analysis Task • One of the key mysteries of the novel—the identity of the man hiding on the moor has been revealed. • Now that we know it was Holmes all along, we will look back over the book and see how Doyle skillfully plants clues while concealing the mystery from both Watson and us. • In order to do so, we will have to reason backwards: now that we know the truth, we can look at the clues in a new light.

  5. Analysis Task – Groups of 3-5 • Create a poster that traces how Doyle structures this particular mystery. The poster should include: • All the clues Doyle has dropped about the mysterious man on the moor • Choose one graphical organizer to show the sequence of the clues and how they build off one another: • a timeline to emphasize chronology • a flowchart to emphasize logical connections • a map to emphasize geographical location. •  An explanation of how Doyle effectively pulled off the surprise without letting on for so long • An explanation of why Doyle concealed Holmes’s presence from the reader and Watson

  6. Analysis Task • Groups will present their posters to the class • Posters will be displayed around the classroom for a Gallery Walk • Other classes will be able to agree or disagree with your evidence based upon evidence they find in the text

  7. APEX • In chapter eleven, when Watson is searching for the mysterious man, he writes: “Always there was this feeling of an unseen force, a fine net drawn round us with infinite skill and delicacy, holding us so lightly that it was only at some supreme moment that one realized that one was indeed entangled in its meshes.” Who is the person behind this “unseen force”? • Is it Doyle, Holmes, or someone else? • Back up your interpretation with textual evidence.

  8. Homework • Make sure you have completely annotated Chapter 12 • Identify two-three significant points in the passage that are worthy of further inquiry and discussion. These can be words, phrases, sentences, or larger structural pieces (like a shift in tone between two paragraphs). • This will be used for classwork tomorrow!
