  2. Intentional Guidance Target Group • 11th grade students failing math and still enrolled in Module A or B (Algebra 1-1) • Selection based on 11th grade students enrolled in Module A or B at start of semester one • Goal = to increase passing rate and to provide skills for academic success

  3. Intentional Guidance Lesson Study Skills Group When: One period, rotating How often: Every other week Number of Students:45, 5 groups of 9

  4. Intentional Guidance Lessons • Identify personal learning style • Importance of attendance and organizational skills • Develop skill in reading transcripts, status report, and recovery options • Identify and develop S.M.A.R.T. goals • Overcoming barriers to success

  5. ASCA National Standards Academic Standard A Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span. Academic Standard B Students will complete school with the academic preparation to choose from a wide range of substantial postsecondary options, including college.

  6. Student Competencies • A1: Improve academic self-concept • A2: Acquire skills for improving learning • B1: Improve learning

  7. Research shows… • Student success study skills are effective in increasing and sustaining academic achievement (Miranda, Webb, Brigman, & Peluso, 2007) • Group counseling interventions are effective in addressing student academic concerns (Steen & Kaffenberger, 2007)

  11. Our Goal • The 11th grade study skills group intervention is designed to support: • Increasing homework completion rate • Advancing to next level of math • Developing study and organizational skills • Increasing attendance • Having a graduation plan in place

  12. Results • Achievement-Related Data: • Attendance • Academic reviews with graduation plan in place • Achievement Data: • Advancing to next level of math • Pass math CAHSEE

  13. Achievement-Related Data Attendance: Single period truancy decreased by 40% Quarter One to Quarter Two Before group: 57 After group: 34

  14. Achievement-Related Data • Academic reviews with parents implemented • 100% of students had a completed graduation plan in place Academic Reviews 100% Completion

  15. Achievement Data • Advancing to the next level of math • 50% advanced • Compared to 38% similar students not in study skills group

Lessons Learned • What worked: • Small group sessions • Students completing sessions showed improvement in attendance and grades • Individual academic review with parents • Specific graduation plans were written • What didn’t work (Limitations): • Number of students that left for alternative settings • Number of participants decreased

  18. Next Steps: • Continue early academic review conferences with parents • Conduct study skills group at end of 9th and/or beginning of 10th grade
