Leading the Korean Wave • MBC has produced and delivered 8 out of the 10 dramas that have the highest average program rating. • A large number of MBC dramas have become immensely popular across Asia and worldwide, leading “Hallyu,” the Korean wave • Especially, <Jewel in the Palace> recorded the highest rating ever by a foreign drama in China, Japan, Iran and Turkey • MBC continues to deliver dramas that are not only exciting to watch, but also contains insightful reflections on changing social values and ideals.

What Is Love • 1992.01.04 ~ 05.31 • Director: Park Cheol • Writer: Kim Soo-hyun • Main Cast: Yeo Woon-gye, • Yoon Yeo-jung, Kim Hye-ja, Lee Soon-jae, Choi Min-su, Ha Hee-ra • This weekend drama of early 1990’s boasted a record breaking popularity, being exported to China and drawing 150,000,000 people in front of TV. • In Korea, people say marriage is not about two people getting together, but about two different families merging into one. This drama presents two families with sharply contrasting values. One is conservative and patriarchic, the other modern and utilitarian. The drama comically portrays the troubles that arise as these two families become quarrelsome in-laws, while also delivering an insightful message about the importance of harmonizing traditional and progressive values.

This drama is inspired by a true historic figure, Hur Jun, who was a King’s physician and wrote Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑), which is considered the best medical literature in Korean history. • Born as an illegitimate son of a nobleman, Hur Jun meets a renowned physician named Yoo Eui-tae, who changes his life by teaching him medicine. Hur Jun’s humanly struggle against social barriers and his selfless devotion to healing the sick will leave a lasting impact on the audience.

Jewel in the Palace • 2003.09.15 ~ 2004.03.30 • Director: Lee Byung-hoon, Kim Seung-soo • Writer: Kim Young-hyun • Main Cast: Lee Young-ae, Ji Jin-hee, Hong Lee-na, Yim Ho • <Jewel in the Palace> not only set off a nationwide wave of fans in Korea and but also became immensely popular across the globe, introducing Korean cuisine and culture to the world. • This drama is based on the true story of Jang-geum, the first woman to become a supreme royal physician in Korean history. Despite being born a low-class girl in a male-dominated society, Jang-Geum overcomes a series of social discrimination and base schemes with wisdom and persistence, ultimately becoming the king’s physician.
