  1. 2012 Election Results President- Obama (Dem) Senate Majority- Democrat • Senate- Joe Donnelly (Dem) from Indiana House Majority- Republican • House of Rep- 4 Rep, 1 Dem from Indiana Indiana Governor- Mike Pence (Rep) Indiana State Senate- Dem Majority (District 30)- Scott Schneider (Rep) Indiana House- Republican Majority Superintendent of Education- Glenda Ritz (Dem) Same Sex Marriage- Legalized in Maine and Maryland • already legalized in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and D.C. • 8 total states now have legalized gay marriage Legalization of recreactional Marijuana in Colorado and Washington • Passed on the ballot but not certain if it will be legalized • Discrepancy between being illegal for the federal gov’t and legal for the state gov’t • If passed, users 21+ • excise tax on marijuana will be at 25% for growers, middlemen, and users

Became major Spanish base for trade in the Pacific. • The Dutch and the English- dominated trade (better financed than Portuguese) • Dutch East India Company- Massive profits from spice trade (controlled entire Indonesian Archipelago) • Mainland Southeast Kingdoms Burma (Myanmar), Siam (Thailand), and Vietnam- Strong monarchies were able to resist European encroachment (but did participate in some trade)

The French and the British in India • The Impact of the Western Powers • Hindu and Muslim people controlled by the Mughal Empire • English beat out the Dutch and French for control of India • British established the East India Company- traded Indian cotton made goods and spices • Battle of Plassey (1757)- Small British force defeated Mughal army ten times its size. • British East India Company could collect taxes from Mughal Court • Marked the gradual transfer of the Indian Subcontinent to British control • Seven Years War (1756-1763)- British forced French to withdraw from India completely
