  1. InfraCal TOG/TPH Analyzer,Model CVH Extraction Procedure www.wilksIR.com

  2. The sample extraction can be done using either a prescription bottle with a septa cap or a separatory funnel

  3. Extraction using a prescription bottle with a septa cap

  4. Collect a measured amount of sample

  5. For samples that will be stored for more than a day or for samples with a high pH: Adjust the pH to less than 2 with Hydrochloric acid or Sulfuric Acid (typically 3-5 drops depending on buffers in sample)

  6. 10 parts sample to 1 part solvent • Add Solvent For example: For 150 ml of sample add 15 ml of solvent

  7. Shake for 2 minutes

  8. Open the cap on the bottle during the 2 minute shaking to relieve the pressure

  9. Solvent is heavier than water and will sink

  10. Turn bottle upside down

  11. Use the syringe to remove the solvent

  12. Fill the cuvette with solvent

  13. Place the cuvette in the InfraCal frosted side to the front

  14. Press the run button

  15. Oil concentration displayed 14

  16. Extraction using a separatory funnel

  17. Pour measured sample into separatory funnel

  18. Measure one tenth of the sample size of solvent For example: For 150 ml of sample add 15 ml of solvent

  19. Pour the solvent into the sample collection container to rinse interior surfaces and cap of left over oil

  20. Pour the solvent from the sample container into separatory funnel containing sample

  21. Shake for 2 minutes

  22. Stop to vent during the 2 minutes shaking to relieve the pressure

  23. Put the separatory funnel into the stand

  24. Allow the solvent to sink to the bottom

  25. Fill the cuvette with solvent

  26. Place the cuvette in the InfraCal frosted side to the front

  27. Press the run button

  28. Oil concentration displayed 14

  29. Silica Gel Extraction The difference between TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) and TOG (Total Oil and Grease) is the polar organics are removed from the extract using silica gel. The remaining hydrocarbons are the non-polar components considered to be TPH

  30. Silica Gel Extraction • Put filter paper into funnel • Add silica

  31. Silica Gel Extraction • Put filter paper into funnel • Add silica • Put funnel into bottle • Put solvent extract through silica gel

  32. Silica Gel Extraction • Put filter paper into funnel • Add silica • Put funnel into bottle • Put solvent extract through silica gel

  33. Silica Gel Extraction • Put filter paper into funnel • Add silica • Put funnel into bottle • Put solvent extract through silica gel • Put solvent extract into cuvette

  34. Silica Gel Extraction • Put filter paper into funnel • Add silica • Put funnel into bottle • Put solvent extract through silica gel • Put solvent extract into cuvette • Put cuvette into InfraCal frosted side to the front

  35. Press the run button
