  1. Fuel Cycleof HighTemperature Gas Cooled Reactors and the Cost Estimate of Their Electricity Production InnovativeNuclearConcepts, LibliceWorkshop, April10 – 13, 2012 Evžen Losa Department ofNuclearReactors

  2. Content • Introduction • Motivation • Assumptions • RecentHTGR concepts • Input data • Output data • Conclusions Department ofNuclearReactors

  3. Introduction • The idea came in 50’softhe last century • Commonfeatures: • Graphitemoderator • Disperse fuel • Helium coolant • Hightemperatureoffuelfailure • Corewithtriangularlatticeorstochasticformation • Knowledgeofoperationgained Department ofNuclearReactors

  4. Motivation • Oneofthe GEN IV reactor type representativewithnear term deployment • Meetsthe GEN IV criteria set in 2002 • Indefiniteeconomicfactorsofoperationpublished • Thecostofoperationneeds to beestimatedforthefeasibilitystudy Department ofNuclearReactors

  5. Assumptions • Costsofthe front endoffuelcycleaccordingtheexchange spot prices (exceptfabrication) • Costsofthebackendoffuelcyclesame as fortheLWRs • Investmentandoperationcosts per MW outputoftheHTRs are thesame as ofthelargeLWRs (Yuliang S., HTR-PM Project Status and Test Program, IAEA TWG-GCR-22, 201) • Thecapacityfactor on thelevelof 80 % Department ofNuclearReactors

  6. Recent HTGR concepts • GT-MHR • Fuelenr. 15.5 %, burn-up 121 MWd/kg, Net el. output 286 MW, netefficiency 48 % • PBMR • Fuelenr. 9.6 %, burn-up 92 MWd/kg, Net el. output 180 MW, netefficiency 45 % • HTR-PM • Fuelenr. 8.9 %, burn-up 90 MWd/kg, Net el. output 210 MW, netefficiency42 % Department ofNuclearReactors

  7. Input data Department ofNuclearReactors

  8. Input data Department ofNuclearReactors

  9. Output data Department ofNuclearReactors

  10. Output data Department ofNuclearReactors

  11. Output data Department ofNuclearReactors

  12. Conclusions • Apparentdistinction in electricitycostsfromtheHTGRsandtheLWRs • TheHTGRs are competetivewiththeLWRs, whenthefuelfabricationcost drops to thelevelof 1600 US$/kg • Thecostswerecalculatedfortheelectricityproductiononly, thehighpotentialheatconsumption in industrywouldbefavourablefortheeconomyoftheHTGRs Department ofNuclearReactors
