  3. Jesus’ Teaching about God • God is Near • Matt 10:29-30 – sparrows and hairs • God is Father – “abba” • Previously, father of the nation (Malachi 2:10) • Now Father of us (Matt. 6:8) • Jesus’ “abba” (Mark 14:36)

  4. Jesus’ Teaching About the Kingdom • Taken from the “reign of God” in the OT • Psa 29:10 …the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. • Kingdom = reign of God among men • Children are the prototype (Matt 19:14) • Deliverance from demonic power (Matt 12:28) • Is coming in a visible way (Mark 9:1) • It is near, within (Luke 19:52) • Kingdom Parables: • Leaven, mustard seed, treasure in a field

  5. Jesus’ Teachings about Himself • Messiah: used mainly by others, but acknowledged by Jesus. Means the “Christ”, or the “Anointed.” • Son of Man: Jesus predominant name for Himself. Used in OT both for “human” and for “prophet.” • Son of God: Used both by Jesus and about Him. Sometimes just “the Son.”

  6. Jesus’ Teachings about Himself • Messiah: • Mark 8:29 (Mt 16:16) – by Peter • John 4:26 – by the Samaritan woman • John 18:36-39 – by Pilate • Son of Man: (see Daniel 7:13-14) • Mark 10:45 – came to seek and save the lost • Mark 14:62 – will come on clouds

  7. Jesus’ Teachings about Himself • Son of God: • Special meanings in the Gospel of John: • The Word became flesh, the Son of God and King of Israel (John 1:1, 14, 34, 49) • This is the goal of faith (John 20:28-31) • In synoptics: • Luke 8:28 – recognized by a demon • Matt 11:27 – no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom he reveals him.

  8. Jesus’ Divinity • Other claims to divinity: • Authority claims (Matt. 28:19, Mark 2:5-7, Luke 14:26-27) • “I” (or “I am”) sayings: • “..but I say to you…” (Matt. 5) • “I am” the resurrection (John 11:25) • “I am” the way, truth, and life (John 14:6)

  9. Teaching About Relationships • With God: • Fear (Matt. 23:23) • True Righteousness (Sermon on Mount) • Father (Lord’s Prayer) • With Others: • Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12) • God is our example (Luke 6:36) • Faithfulness and Honesty (Divorce – Mark 10:6-12)

  10. Tying these together: • Mark 12:29 – 31 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
