  1. Foreign Words Used in English Reading Standard 1.3: Students will recognize and use frequently used foreign words in English.

  2. Spaghetti • Long thin pasta from Italy.

  3. Pizza • A popular Italian dish made with bread, tomatoes, and cheese (and other ingredients).

  4. Mozzarella • An Italian cheese made by spinning and cutting (“mozzare” means to cut).

  5. Déjà vu • French term meaning “already seen”

  6. Cliché • When something has been so overused that it loses its intended force.

  7. Bonjour • French word meaning “hello”

  8. Bon appétit • French term meaning “enjoy your meal”

  9. Rendezvous • French term meaning “a planned meeting between two parties”

  10. Words derived from Spanish • Bravo – a shout of “bravo!” • Pronto – to do something quickly. • Amigo – a friend. • Fiesta – a party. • Adobe – a sundried brick made of clay and straw. • Rodeo – public display of cowboy skills (riding, roping, etc.) • Comandante – a commander.

  11. Words derived from French • Bon voyage – farewell and good wishes. • Chic – attractive and fashionable. • Entrée – usually known as the main course of a meal. • Hors d’oeuvre – small, tasty appetizer (spicy meat, fish, cheese, etc.)

  12. Words derived from Italian • Nonno – the Italian term for grandfather. • Espresso – a strong coffee prepared with steam pressure.

  13. Words derived from German • angst – a feeling of worry or insecurity • strudel – a type of pastry with fruit filling • diesel – a type of fuel for motor vehicles • frankfurter – a hot dog • delicatessen - a place that sells meats and cheeses • glitz – sparkle • Kindergarten – the first grade of elementary school • kitschy – something tacky or ugly decorating the house
