  1. Low Bridge By Jackson, Max, Elim, Kiersten

  2. The canal is different because it does not have flowing water, and it is man made. • It was DeWitt Clinton’s BIG idea and others thought it was crazy. • The Erie Canal was built on July 4, 1817. The Erie Canal was built to have a faster, cheaper, easier way of transportation. The Beginnings of the Erie Canal.

  3. Army’s of foreigners helped build the canal. It was DeWitt Clinton’s BIG idea and others thought it was crazy. The beginnings continued.

  4. It would take about 9 days to cross the Erie Canal.Lake Erie and the Hudson River are two bodies of water connected to the Erie Canal. • Some cities that are along the canal are Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, and Rochester. Geography

  5. The canal is useful because you could get goods from Albany to Buffalo. • The Erie Canal was used for travel and shipping goods faster. • It is still used today because people can take boat tours. How the Erie Canal was used

  6. It cost 7 million dollars to build the canal. • The canal was 363 miles long, 40 feet wide, and 4 feet deep. • A lock works when a boat goes into a gate, they then close the gate and they raise the boat upward. • The type of boat that was most common was the Packet boat. The boat literally was a floating house. Interesting Facts

  7. Max: What I found most interesting was that someone could fall off the boat and drown. • Jackson: What I found most interesting was a person would shout “LOW BRIDGE” and people would scram off the deck. • Elim: I was shocked to find out that people died on the Erie Canal. • Kiersten: I found it interesting that the Erie Canal was dug by men with shovels. I could not believe that the Erie Canal was 4 feet deep, and that the boats could fit in the water. Author’s Thoughts
