El NINO!. El Nino. Occurs when the tradewinds over the equator weaken and reverse direction (blow from west to east instead of east to west). Allows warm water to move eastward in the Pacific. This causes downwelling instead of upwelling which decreases nutrients for fish.

  2. El Nino Occurs when the tradewinds over the equator weaken and reverse direction (blow from west to east instead of east to west). Allows warm water to move eastward in the Pacific. This causes downwelling instead of upwelling which decreases nutrients for fish. Also causes increased rainfall across the southern tier of the US and in Peru, which has caused destructive flooding, and drought in the West Pacific, sometimes associated with devastating brush fires in Australia.

  3. La Nina Opposite of El Nino Unusually cold temperatures in Equatorial Pacific Ocean. In the U.S., winter temperatures are warmer than normal in the Southeast, and cooler than normal in the Northwest.
